KANU HEART FOUNDATION

About Us

Kanu Heart Foundation, a charity organization established by the Nigerian International soccer Star, Nwankwo Kanu in July 21, 2000 has metamorphosed into a colossus with great achievements in local and international circles.

With the primary aim of “putting back smiles” to the faces of Nigerians and the Africans “BLUE CHILDREN/ADULTS” who are suffering from various heart defects otherwise could hardly survive their 5th birthdays not to talk of living a normal life expectancy.

Most of these patients are indigent as they cannot afford the high cost of open heart surgeries in foreign hospitals

As at December 2007, seven years after our debut, 287 beneficiaries, inclusive of accompanied parents/officials have benefited from the KHF surgery project-see attached list of some beneficiaries.

The attendance goodwill generated by these lives threatening open – heart surgeries cannot be over emphasized as we owe gratitude to the Almighty God, the teaming Nigerians, Africans and Europeans, Corporate bodies, government and various Agencies that have identified with this humanitarian venture of saving lives.

Incidentally the number of unattended cases is rising by the day.

Our mission is to give every African child with heart defect a new lease of life as we are committed to achieving our set goals which include:

1.                  Establishing a Cardiac Specialist Hospital in Nigeria.

2.              Establishing a Cardiao Vascular Centre in various States of the federation where people can walk in  and examined of their heart condition free.

3.            To provide a platform for quick medical attention to many heart patients who are still handicapped financially to get treatment in overseas hospitals by bringing Cardiac Surgeons to carry out heart treatment in Nigeria.

4.                  To contribute in the area of Research findings, Lectures and Seminars as well as creating the desired awareness necessary for combating heart related problems.

TRUSTEES: The foundation has board of trustees who are persons of integrity and social standing amongst whom are Nwankwo Kanu (MON, OON, UNICEF AMBASSADOR) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chief Segun Osoba, Mr. Ben Bruce, Mr. Onyebuchi Abia and Mr. Iain Nelson. The foundation lost its founding Chairman Air Commander Sampson Emeka Omeruah  to the cold hands of death on December 4, 2006.

FUNDINGS: The KHF with our founder and financial inspirator Kanu Nwankwo organize events and programmes to raise funds. It also solicits financial support from various individuals and corporate bodies to carryout operations.

In our march towards achieving these set goals we have encountered numerous challenges which threatened to abort our vision. But with God on our side our testimony shows the incomparable hand of the creator.

This journey started in England where we operated the first two beneficiaries of the foundation master Oluwatofunmi Okude and little Enitan Adesola at Crown Hospital London in 2000.

The exorbitant high fees charged by London hospital pushed us to search for new partners in Israel where the Save-a-Child heart organization opened its door to our relationship with Wolfson Medical Centre in Tel Aviv.

In Israel we did so many open heart surgeries, and when the number of patients with heart defects began on a vertical proportion we started to search for more open doors. And this search took us to India where we have many hospitals working with us even at present.

In trying to cope with the demanding increase in foreign exchange occasioned by these surgeries in foreign land we decided to test run the idea of bringing Heart Surgeons and Experts to carryout surgeries in our hospitals. We finally got the International Children Heart Foundation; Menphis USA to come to the University Teaching Hospital Enugu in 2003, there about 13 open Heart Surgeries were performed by Professor Novick leading other Nigerian doctors under 10 days.

Despite the loss of 3 children after the surgeries, to the cold hands of death, we are encouraged by the zeal and enthusiasm with which our Nigerian Doctors performed. This is a clear indication that given the right atmosphere and the necessary equipment and infrastructure what currently obtain in the countries of India , Israel , and England will be obtainable in Nigeria .

The journey to this great Signpost has not been easy. We have had the pains to receive corpses of some dear ones that went to find solace in foreign lands. We have equally had the joy to celebrate the new lease of life provided to these “KHF ambassadors” to which we give God the Glory. In all it has been a 98% Success Story. Although we are basically children oriented in our format, we have nonetheless provided medical and surgery assistance to many adults.

FINANCES / SPONSORSHIP

In financing these surgeries the Kanu Heart Foundation has to contend with the huge financial burden associated with open Heart Surgeries and some complex cases.

While fees charged by these countries vary according to degree of cases, meeting up the financial burden has been a very big challenge to the Kanu Heart Foundation. Here we want to put on record the invaluable contribution of the Founder Nwankwo Kanu who kick started the foundation. We also owe gratitude to various state governors, Government agencies, Corporate Organization, Multinationals, Private and government Schools, Market women and individuals who have been part of this Success Story with their support. We would not also fail to mention Mr. President who provided the enabling environment necessary for us to thrive.
